History of St Mark’s, Florence
Founder of St Mark’s
Reverend
Charles Tooth
The River Arno flooded in 1966 and many places in Florence were underwater.
In Via Maggio, the water came into the church and up the walls. When the water receded, the oil from the basement left a line on the font.
Some of the artefacts saved from the flood, are now displayed in the cabinet at the back of the church, near the font.
You can see the beautiful blue stencilling in the cabinet.
This was once all over the walls, but was removed in the clean-up after the flood. If you look carefully, you can still see a few traces on this side of the church.
We have many War Memorials to British and Commonwwealth soldiers who fought and died in Italy during the Second World War.
This one was dedicated in October 2022, by Father Chris Williams, when the Mayor of Arezzo, the British Ambassador to Italy, and over 100 Service Personnel from the UK came to be acknowledge this piece of history.
